Epilogue Scotland

Scotland is close to the Netherlands, 1+ hour flying, but it is real different. Especially when you get out of the big cities, actually a few Km outside of Glasgow everything changes. Most notable of course the landscape. It changed many times, The Trossachs, The Highlands, Shetland, Orkney, Skye, all have their different landscape en scenery. Also the people are, although everywhere rather friendly and welcoming, different in attitude, sometimes even a bit reserved like at Orkney.

It was easy to drive on the left side, although on the narrow roads with 2 lanes, an accident can happen easily. On the single track roads, which I have seen and driven for many Km's, the speed is much lower and people stop even earlier than later on a passing place, works great.
I have had luck with the weather, June was a very good Month in Scotland and I did not experience a lot of rain. One day at Shetland and the last day driving from Skye were bad, but for the rest OK to perfect weather. Now I am back in Amsterdam with today up to 35 degrees Celsius I appreciated that weather a lot.
There are numerous accommodations to choose from. Normally I do not arrange anything, but now some I would have never chosen when arranging myself. As some were not really in a nice place or were from a rather basic quality. Sometimes the outside does not do justice to the inside, my last stops in Skye and Cairndow are examples of that. They were great.
Traveling by ferry gave me many options to meet people, this time in the accommodations less as they were so empty.
The Ales are rather nice. I am not a Whiskey drinker, but obviously that is also OK :-). The food however was not the best I experienced, although again I have some great food too.

  • What did I like most?
  • The even changing landscape and the many animals. Also the friendliness of most people I  met.
  • What did I dislike most?
  • Not so much, but if to answer ... the empty accommodations. In some they told me it had to do with the Football Worldcup.
  • Which city/town was best?
  • Actually I like Stirling, Saint Andrews and Stromness, but many others were equally nice. One very small place "Stein" at Skye is to my opinion at good weather the place to be, check it out yourself.
  • Which activity was best?
  • I think the hiking and Noss was the most special one, for almost 3 hours I walked through nature, being able to see some spectacular birds and experience great scenic views. But there were many other place almost equally good.
  • Which Ale was best?
  • I really do not know, each time I tried a local one, they're all different, but all nice.
  • Best overall day?
  • I could say Noss, but I think the first day of Skye topped that even due to the complete day with changing experiences.
  • Overall score?
  • I would say a 8 out of 10. It could even  have been better if I have chosen my own accommodations I think. But overall great country for a holiday, that is if you like nature, culture and lots of beautiful scenery. Also the very nice people ad a lot to it.
  • Now need some time to adjust to the very warm and humid Amsterdam again.
  • Next Holiday?
  • Possibly Ireland or Canada again.

The route I took (more or less)
